WANA (Jun 28) – Tehran has completed construction of its first parking shelter, with operations expected to begin soon, as the city expands its civil defense infrastructure following the recent 12-day war.

 

Tehran City Council Chairman Mehdi Chamran said neither Tehran nor other Iranian cities currently have fully dedicated bomb shelters. However, the District 10 Mayor announced that the city’s first parking shelter has been completed in one of Tehran’s most densely populated areas.

 

The Tehran Municipality launched its shelter construction program last year after the City Council approved funding for the project.

 

During the 12-day war, Tehran Municipality used metro stations as temporary shelters and designated several public parks as safe locations. Officials said the newly completed facility will function as a public parking garage under normal conditions but will be converted into an emergency shelter during crises.

 

The four-level underground structure covers 2,600 square meters and can accommodate more than 1,000 people. Authorities also said construction of several additional parking shelters is already planned.

 

Urban experts said Tehran should upgrade underground spaces, including some metro stations, with facilities such as restrooms, improved access, ventilation systems, and accommodations suitable for extended stays. They further recommended using the city’s emergency management warehouses and crisis-response facilities to strengthen preparedness during wartime.
