WANA (Sep 02) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a statement on Tuesday, firmly rejecting the latest claims made in the final communiqué of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) foreign ministers’ meeting regarding Iran’s sovereignty over the three islands, the Arash gas field, and its nuclear program.

The ministry emphasized that Iran holds undeniable sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb, and that any repetition of baseless claims will not alter historical, geographical, or legal realities. It also underlined that Iran will take all necessary measures to ensure security and protect its national interests in the area.

The full text of the statement is as follows:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran completely rejects the repetitive and legally invalid claim of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council regarding the three Iranian islands—contained in the final communiqué of the Council’s 165th ministerial meeting—and once again reaffirms Iran’s absolute sovereignty over Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb as inseparable parts of Iranian territory. It is emphasized that the repetition of baseless allegations in similar statements will never alter the geographic, historical, and legal facts related to these islands.

Accordingly, while rejecting the interventionist language contained in the aforementioned statement, it is reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the exercise of its sovereign rights, will take every necessary action to secure safety and security in these Iranian islands and safeguard the country’s interests within their boundaries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, stressing Iran’s rights in the Arash gas field based on historical rights and past negotiations, deems unilateral claims regarding this field invalid and affirms that issuing repetitive statements or raising unilateral allegations creates no legal rights for the State of Kuwait. Achieving a fair and lasting agreement over the Arash field requires bilateral dialogue, joint efforts, and a constructive atmosphere to ensure mutual rights and interests.

The Ministry also emphasizes Iran’s legitimate and legal rights to benefit from nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), rejecting any attempt to cast doubt on the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. It notes that Iran has consistently fulfilled its commitments under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and engaged responsibly and in good faith in negotiations aimed at building confidence. However, the United States and European parties, through continuous violations and breaches of the UN Charter and international law, have disrupted these negotiation processes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs draws regional countries’ attention to the immediate and real threat posed by the weapons of mass destruction possessed by the Zionist regime and stresses that achieving a region free of nuclear weapons requires collective determination by regional states to compel the international community to take effective measures regarding the genocidal and aggressive Israeli regime.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates the necessity of ensuring lasting regional security and stability through the participation of all countries—without destabilizing interventions by external actors—and reaffirms its readiness to strengthen cooperation to achieve this goal.

The Ministry also welcomes the position of PGCC member states in strongly condemning the ongoing genocide in Gaza by the Zionist regime and its crimes against the oppressed Palestinian people. It further stresses the urgent need for effective measures, including the severance of all political and diplomatic relations with this regime, in order to compel it to halt its atrocities in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

The PGCC ministerial council, in its communiqué issued after the meeting in Kuwait on Monday, repeated its long-standing position by claiming that the three islands—Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb—belong to the United Arab Emirates. The statement also rejected Iran’s rights over the jointly shared Arash gas field, asserting that the field lies entirely within Kuwaiti maritime boundaries and belongs solely to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

In addition, the council stressed the importance of continuing negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive solution to Iran’s nuclear issue, a process which, according to the communiqué, should also address all security concerns of PGCC member states.

The foreign ministers’ meeting also discussed regional developments including the situation in Gaza, Iran’s nuclear program, Syria, and Lebanon.
