WANA (Feb 08) – Tehran is set to host one of Iran’s most significant scientific events in the field of nuclear technology in the spring of 2026—an event that, given the sensitive geopolitical context surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, carries implications beyond the academic sphere.

According to official announcements, the 32nd National Conference and the Second International Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology will take place in Tehran from May 4 to May 6, 2026. The conference is expected to bring together researchers, university professors, industry experts, and policymakers, addressing a broad range of technical and strategic issues related to nuclear science.

The scientific agenda covers nuclear physics, nuclear data and particle accelerators; nuclear reactor physics, safety, and technological innovation; the nuclear fuel cycle, materials, and radioactive waste management; radiation detection, radiation protection, dosimetry, and metrology; as well as the use of radiation and isotopes in industry and environmental applications.

A substantial portion of the program will focus on medical applications, including radiotherapy, diagnostic techniques, and health physics—areas that Iranian authorities have increasingly highlighted as priorities in recent years.

Other key themes include nuclear technologies in agriculture and food production, plasma physics and fusion energy, quantum sciences and emerging technologies in nuclear applications, and nuclear governance encompassing policy-making, legal frameworks, economics, and innovation. Panels dedicated to education, human resource development, and knowledge management in nuclear science suggest an effort to present a comprehensive picture of Iran’s nuclear research ecosystem.

The significance of the conference extends beyond its technical content. Iran’s nuclear program has been one of the most contentious issues in international diplomacy over the past two decades and remains under close scrutiny by the International Atomic Energy Agency amid ongoing negotiations and tensions. In this context, hosting an international conference focused on scientific and civilian aspects of nuclear technology may be seen as an attempt to emphasize research-oriented and non-military dimensions of the program.
