Tehran’s “Behind the Promises of Freedom” Mural
WANA (Nov 05) – On the eve of November 4, marking the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, a new mural titled “Behind the Promises of Freedom” was unveiled in Tehran’s Enghelab (Revolution) Square, drawing diverse reactions from international observers.
Foreign commentators described the artwork as a “clever and creative” depiction that conveys Iran’s political message to the world. They highlighted two central themes written on the mural — “America is untrustworthy” and “America is the Great Satan” — calling them accurate reflections of global political memory.
The mural portrays several world leaders who, according to the artwork’s message, trusted the United States but ultimately failed to achieve their goals, suffering political downfall or defeat. Prominently featured among them are Volodymyr Zelensky, Muammar Gaddafi, Reza Pahlavi, and Saddam Hussein, all depicted as imprisoned or defeated figures.
At the center of the mural stands a dark-toned Statue of Liberty, its intense gaze symbolizing the true face of U.S. policy, according to the artists’ intended message.
The title “Behind the Promises of Freedom” has particularly attracted attention from foreign users, sparking wide online discussion.
Interestingly, many commenters questioned the inclusion of Zelensky among America’s “victims.” They argued that while the Ukrainian leader has not achieved victory, he has manipulated U.S. officials into funding his war efforts at the expense of American taxpayers, thereby wasting U.S. resources rather than suffering exploitation.
November 4 is the day that commemorates three historical events: the exile of Imam Khomeini in 1964, the killing of protesting students in 1978, and the takeover of the U.S. embassy in 1979. This year’s rallies were held nationwide with large participation from citizens, students, and officials under the slogan: “United and steadfast against arrogance.”
