Tehran’s ‘Saint Mary’ Metro Station Challenges Western Stereotypes of Iran
WANA (Oct 14) – Non-Iranian social media users have reacted positively to news of the soon-to-open “Saint Mary” metro station in Tehran, describing it as evidence contradicting the negative image often portrayed by Western media about Iran.
Foreign online activists said naming a metro station in the Iranian capital after Mary, the mother of Jesus, reflects the respect Iranians show toward Armenians and followers of other Abrahamic faiths.
Users emphasized that this gesture demonstrates how fear-based portrayals of Iranian society and governance in Western outlets are misleading.

The Saint Mary station is located near the religious and cultural heart of Tehran’s Armenian community, just a two-minute walk from Saint Sarkis Church. The location is expected to make access to Armenian cultural and religious centers significantly easier for residents.
Commentators also pointed out that mainstream Western narratives about Iran and its treatment of religious minorities are often politically motivated and aimed at advancing anti-Iranian agendas.
Some users went further, comparing the treatment of Christians in Iran and Israel, asserting that “Christians in Iran enjoy greater security than in Israel.”
Below are some of the online reactions shared by users regarding the new metro station.
