The Arrest of Narges Mohammadi and the Controversy Surrounding the Death of Khosrow Alikordi
WANA (Dec 13) – Last week, Khosrow Alikordi, a human rights lawyer from Mashhad, passed away from a heart attack at his office. Initially, his death was officially attributed to a heart attack, but it quickly became a media topic. Some media outlets critical of the Iranian government, disregarding official reports, deemed Alikordi’s death suspicious and claimed it was a “government murder.” They alleged that Alikordi had died from a blow to the head.
However, a video of his final moments, captured by surveillance cameras, showed that Alikordi had been working on his phone when he suddenly suffered a heart attack and collapsed.
During the seventh-day memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, held at the Ghadir Babaali 2 Mosque in Mashhad, a group of people began chanting slogans, which caused tension and controversy during the ceremony. Released videos from the event revealed that Narges Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist and known critic of the Iranian government, was at the center of the protests. Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 and has attracted significant attention from both the media and foreign officials due to her activism in Iran.

Revelations from Inside Evin Women’s Ward
WANA (Feb 24) – The name Narges Mohammadi, the human rights activist and winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has been prominent in Iran’s political landscape for years. While she is portrayed as a symbol of resistance outside prison, accounts from within Evin Women’s Ward paint a starkly different picture—one not of a […]
Narges Mohammadi has faced criticism for her consistent support of international sanctions against Iran. Previously, she had been sentenced to long prison terms in 2011, 2013, and 2015, and has remained a central figure in political discourse. In her interviews, Mohammadi has openly supported the economic pressure and sanctions, considering them tools for changing policies in Iran.
These contradictory stances have led many human rights activists, including Reza Nasri, to accuse her of hypocrisy: “How can one support sanctions and still claim to defend human rights?” Despite receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mohammadi’s political positions continue to raise serious questions about the contradictions in her support for the rights of the Iranian people.
The governor of Mashhad announced that following these protests, several individuals, who appeared to have engaged in disruptive behavior, were arrested. The Mashhad prosecutor also confirmed that Narges Mohammadi was among those detained during the incident. Reports further suggest that two law enforcement officers were injured during the protests after being attacked with a cold weapon.
These events occurred after Alikordi’s death and during his memorial service. Official sources have stated that Alikordi died from a heart attack, but some opposition media outlets and political activists continue to repeat their claims that his death was suspicious.
