WANA (Aug 31) – On the evening of Sunday, September 7, 2025, the night sky will host one of the most breathtaking and longest astronomical events of the century: a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a “Blood Moon.” Lasting more than three hours, this rare celestial phenomenon offers a unique opportunity for skywatchers around the world—especially in Iran—to witness the mesmerizing cosmic dance of the Earth and the Moon.

The Blood Moon: A Unique Phenomenon

A total lunar eclipse, often called the “Blood Moon” because of its copper-red hue, occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. Contrary to the common assumption that the Moon disappears during the eclipse, sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere scatters and reflects onto the Moon’s surface, giving it a striking reddish glow. This event is not only visually captivating but also provides a deeper appreciation of celestial interactions.

Duration and Visibility

The eclipse will last for more than 3 hours and 28 minutes, with the total phase continuing for about 82 minutes. Such an extended duration makes this event one of the longest and most remarkable lunar eclipses of the century. According to forecasts, more than half of the world’s population will be able to view the entire event, while about 87 percent will see at least part of it.

Precise Timing in Iran

Iran is among the countries where the eclipse will be fully visible. The detailed timing for Tehran (local time) is as follows:

  • Penumbral eclipse begins: 18:58
  • Partial eclipse begins: 19:57
  • Total eclipse begins: 21:01
  • Maximum eclipse: 21:41
  • Total eclipse ends: 22:23
  • Partial eclipse ends: 23:26
  • Penumbral eclipse ends: 00:25 (early hours of Monday, September 8)

This marks the first time in several years that a total lunar eclipse will be fully visible across Iran—a rare and exciting chance for astronomy enthusiasts to experience an unforgettable night under the stars and witness one of nature’s most stunning spectacles.
