WANA (May 04) – In a post on his Truth Social platform late Sunday, Donald Trump announced the launch of a new maritime initiative dubbed “Project Liberty,” aimed at escorting international vessels currently stalled in the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions, though critics argue the move overlooks the role of U.S. and Israeli actions in precipitating the current crisis.

The Initiative: “Project Liberty”

Trump claimed that numerous countries with no involvement in the ongoing Middle East conflict have appealed to the United States for assistance. He stated that these nations are seeking help to free ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the affected parties as innocent, neutral observers.

The U.S. President further asserted that:

  • The U.S. has notified these countries that it will guide their vessels safely through the narrow waterways for the benefit of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States.
  • He has instructed his representatives to ensure the safe extraction of ships and their crews.
  • Project Liberty is scheduled to begin Monday morning, Middle East time.

Trump characterized the mission as a “humanitarian gesture” by the U.S. and Middle Eastern nations, including Iran, noting that many ships are facing shortages of food and essential supplies. He warned, however, that any interference with this process would be met with a “decisive” response.

He also stated that his representatives are engaged in “very positive” discussions with Iranian officials, which he believes could lead to beneficial results for all parties.

In a separate post, he shared an image of himself holding a hand of cards, asserting that he “holds all the cards” in the current standoff.

While Washington projects a narrative of total control, analysts suggest the power balance in the Strait of Hormuz remains complex. Iran’s strategic role in the waterway continues to be a primary factor that cannot be sidelined by unilateral declarations.
