WANA (Jul 08) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced the effective termination of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran, while simultaneously ordering a halt to all trade with NATO ally Spain over its refusal to support American military operations against Tehran.

 

Speaking during a meeting with the NATO Secretary General on the sidelines of the alliance summit in Turkey, Trump stated that from his perspective, the agreement was over and that he no longer wished to deal with Iran. Despite declaring the ceasefire finished, Trump noted that he would still allow American negotiators to continue talking with Iranian officials if they wished to do so.

 

The remarks come amid repeated U.S. violations of the 14-point Islamabad agreement, including ongoing strikes in Lebanon and recent attacks on cities along Iran’s southern coastline.

 

Assassination Claims and Insults

During his address, Trump resorted to disparaging remarks against the Iranian nation, describing them as vicious and sick.

 

He also claimed that he was on an Iranian hit list for assassination. Trump remarked that he believed he had been somewhat lucky so far, but added that this status might not last very long.

 

Trade Halt with Spain

Turning his attention to European allies, Trump labeled Spain an unsuitable NATO partner and announced that he had instructed the U.S. Treasury Secretary to terminate all commercial and trade relations with Madrid.

 

The retaliatory move follows Spain’s decision in March to ban the U.S. military from using joint military bases on Spanish soil for operations against Iran. Madrid had also closed its airspace to American aircraft participating in the conflict.

 

Renewed Focus on Greenland and NATO Criticisms

Trump also revived his interest in Greenland, asserting that the territory was highly important to the United States but insignificant to Denmark.

 

He claimed that when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany in less than a day, Copenhagen requested the U.S. to protect Greenland. He added that Washington foolishly returned the territory later and should never have done so.

 

Concluding his remarks, Trump reiterated his deep dissatisfaction with the alliance’s lack of support for Washington’s military campaign, stating that he was not pleased with NATO regarding its stance on both Greenland and Iran.
