Trump Halts “Freedom Project” in Strait of Hormuz
WANA (May 06) – Donald Trump announced early Wednesday that the United States has temporarily suspended the so-called “Freedom Project” in the Strait of Hormuz—a plan aimed at escorting commercial vessels through the critical maritime route.
According to Trump, the decision followed requests from several countries, including Pakistan, and comes as Washington assesses the possibility of reaching a broader agreement with Iran.
He stated that while pressure measures remain in place, the operation will be paused briefly to evaluate whether ongoing discussions can lead to a finalized deal.
Trump said:
“Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The “Freedom Project,” introduced by Washington only days earlier, was designed as a military initiative to escort commercial shipping in the Gulf. Its rapid suspension shortly after launch signals a notable shift in the U.S. approach toward the region.
Iranian officials had previously warned that any foreign military presence approaching the Strait, or vessels deviating from designated routes, could face a response—adding further tension to an already sensitive geopolitical environment.
