Trump Reportedly Angered by Iran’s Demand for War Reparations
WANA (May 11) – American media outlets have reported that Iran’s demand for war reparations has become one of the main sources of tension in the indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, reportedly provoking a strong reaction from Donald Trump.
According to the Associated Press, citing regional diplomats, Trump is angered by Iran’s insistence on receiving compensation and views the demand as politically and symbolically sensitive — and costly — for the United States.
The report states that Iran yesterday sent its response to the U.S. proposals regarding an agreement and ceasefire through Pakistan, which has assumed a mediating role between Tehran and Washington. Hours after the response was delivered, Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Iran’s reply was “unacceptable.”
The Associated Press further reported that Trump is highly sensitive to any payment of reparations to Iran because, in political and historical convention, war reparations are typically paid by the defeated side. As a result, agreeing to such payments could be interpreted domestically in the U.S. — especially in Trump’s political environment — as a sign of retreat or an admission of defeat in the confrontation with Iran.
The report comes as the issues of war, ceasefire, and how to end tensions between Tehran and Washington have become some of the most complicated aspects of the behind-the-scenes negotiations between the two sides. Precise details of the exchanged proposals have still not been made public.
