Trump Suspends ‘Destructive’ Strikes on Iran; Announces Two-Week Ceasefire
WANA (Apr 08) – In a dramatic late-night reversal, President Donald Trump announced a suspension of planned military strikes against Iran, just hours before he was set to execute a series of devastating threats aimed at the country’s core infrastructure.
The announcement, posted to Truth Social, follows days of extreme rhetoric in which the U.S. President warned he would “return Iran to the Stone Age” and vowed that “a whole civilization will die tonight.” The planned offensive was widely expected to target Iran’s vital life-support systems and national infrastructure.
The Role of Pakistani Mediation
President Trump credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan for their diplomatic intervention. According to the President, the Pakistani leaders requested a halt to the “destructive force being sent tonight to Iran.”
In exchange for this suspension, Trump stated that the Islamic Republic must agree to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”
A “Double-Sided Ceasefire”
Trump declared a two-week ceasefire, claiming that the U.S. has already “met and exceeded all Military objectives.” He suggested that a definitive long-term peace agreement is now within reach.
“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” Trump wrote. “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated.”
De-escalation After Existential Threats
The sudden move toward diplomacy comes as a significant shift from Trump’s earlier messages, which had signaled the imminent destruction of the Iranian state. By citing a “10-point proposal” from Tehran, the President indicated that the “long-term problem” of the Middle East may be closing in on a resolution.
While the two-week window provides a temporary reprieve from the threat of total war, the situation remains high-stakes as the world waits to see if the “definitive agreement” can be signed before the ceasefire expires. Trump concluded his message by stating it was an “Honor” to represent the interests of the United States and the countries of the Middle East in resolving the crisis.
