Trump Uses the Term “Trump Strait” Instead of Strait of Hormuz
WANA (Apr 30) – Donald Trump reposted an image on his social media platform, Truth Social, depicting the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Sea of Oman, in which the term “Trump Strait” was used in place of the Strait of Hormuz. The names “Persian Gulf” and “Sea of Oman” were, however, correctly labeled in the same image.
The image was shared without any accompanying explanation and was originally posted by an account named “IStandWithTrump47.”
The move is seen as consistent with Trump’s earlier remarks on the issue, including a statement during comments on the conflict involving Iran, where he said: “The Islamic Republic must open the route of the Trump Strait,” before clarifying that he meant the Strait of Hormuz and adding, “Nothing about me is accidental.”
In another message following Iran’s announcement of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump wrote: “Iran is opening Iran’s strait,” a phrase that drew wide international attention and was interpreted by some observers as an implicit acknowledgment of Iran’s position and role regarding the strategic waterway.
In a related development, following Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions with the United States and Israel, reports indicate a significant rise in global oil prices, with crude reaching its highest level in more than four years.
A report by the Institute for the Study of War also suggests that Iran is unlikely to back down under U.S. pressure. According to the report, Tehran is not willing to engage in negotiations over its nuclear program unless maritime restrictions are lifted and is exploring alternative strategies to maintain leverage, including a potential joint plan with Oman to impose transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The report further notes that developments in other strategic chokepoints, such as Bab al-Mandeb, could further complicate regional dynamics.
