Trump’s Strategic Retreat: “When Neighbors Enrich, Banning Iran is Irrational”
WANA (Jun 18) – The U.S. President, in remarks regarding Iran’s nuclear enrichment, stated: “When others have it, when neighboring countries have it, and you don’t allow them to have it for purposes like electricity and similar things, it’s a bit tough. A little common sense must be used.”
These remarks indicate a shift in Washington’s tone toward Tehran’s nuclear program; a change that stands in stark contrast to Trump’s previous positions of “zero enrichment.”
“Common Sense” or Strategic Retreat?
Trump, who previously called Iran’s enrichment “unacceptable” and whose special representative had emphasized that “we cannot accept even one percent enrichment,” is now speaking from the logic of “neighbors have it, so Iran can have it too.”
Analysts at the Brookings Institution had previously warned that temporary nuclear restrictions were a “fundamental mistake” and that any agreement must be “permanent.” Nevertheless, Trump’s recent statements show that Washington is practically moving toward a model similar to the JCPOA (limited and monitored enrichment).

Paradigm Shift; From “Zero Enrichment” to “Limited Enrichment”
This shift in approach can be analyzed within the framework of the “failure of the maximum pressure strategy.” By maintaining 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium and controlling the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has altered the power equation in its favor.

Trump’s recent remarks should be evaluated as a “strategic victory” for Iran. Through “strategic patience” and “field deterrence” (controlling the Strait of Hormuz, maintaining military capability, and supporting the resistance front), Tehran has succeeded in forcing Washington to accept the principle of enrichment on Iranian soil.
While Israel and Washington hawks insisted on “zero enrichment,” Trump’s shift in position shows that “common sense” has replaced “warmongering slogans” in the White House. Iran is now managing the situation from a position of strength and has turned its “strategic depth” into one of the main components of regional equations.
