U.S. Blacklists Iran’s Persian Gulf Waterway Management Entity
WANA (May 28) – The U.S. Treasury Department has announced sanctions against the “Persian Gulf Waterway Management Entity,” a newly established Iranian organization responsible for reviewing and managing vessel transit requests through the Strait of Hormuz.
The move comes as part of former President Donald Trump’s continued maximum pressure campaign against Iran. Washington claims the organization is linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In a statement, the Treasury Department described Iran’s creation of the entity in the Strait of Hormuz as a form of “maritime extortion” and warned that companies, institutions, and vessels cooperating with the organization could face secondary U.S. sanctions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would continue intensifying its “financial pressure” on Iran, arguing that the measures are aimed at restricting Tehran’s financial resources.
The sanctions on the newly formed entity come at a time when the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors, with any disruption or heightened tensions in the waterway carrying potential consequences for global oil markets and international shipping security.
