U.S. Demand for Iran to Dismantle Nuclear Facilities Violates NPT
WANA (May 11) – Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, has publicly challenged the United States over its demands for Iran to dismantle its nuclear facilities, calling the move a violation of international law.
Reacting to Tehran’s rejection of the American proposal, the Russian diplomat questioned the logic behind Washington’s stance. In a post on X, Ulyanov asked, “Why should Iran accept this US demand?”
He further asserted that such a requirement “goes contrary to the NPT,” referring to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Under Article IV of the treaty, all signatories have the inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, including enrichment.
Ulyanov concluded with a sharp critique of American foreign policy, stating, “Looks like Washington does not care at all about maintaining the integrity of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.”
