WANA (Sep 16) – The U.S. House of Representatives early Wednesday approved a procedural measure paving the way for a subsequent vote on legislation that would impose new sanctions on Russia and Iran.

According to Sputnik, 214 lawmakers voted in favor of the procedural measure, while 211 voted against it.

Two Democratic lawmakers, Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, joined Republicans in supporting the measure, breaking with most members of their party.

In August, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham that would impose new sanctions on Russia and Iran.

According to the report, the legislation calls for a 100% tariff on the five largest buyers of Russian and Iranian energy products, as well as a 500% tariff on all Russian imports into the United States.
