WANA (Mar 30) – The United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on two Iranian nuclear facilities on Friday, targeting sites in Ardakan, Yazd Province, and Khondab, according to Iranian officials.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement posted on its official X account that, based on independent analysis of satellite imagery and its knowledge of the facilities, it has confirmed that the heavy water production plant in Khondab — which Iran reported was hit on March 27 — sustained severe damage and is no longer operational.

The agency added that the facility did not contain nuclear material at the time of the attack.

Hassan Qamari, deputy governor of Arak, stated in an interview on Friday that the Khondab heavy water complex was targeted in two separate phases by what he described as U.S. and Israeli forces.

He noted that, due to preventive measures and strict safety protocols, no casualties were reported and the safety of residents in the area was fully maintained.

Qamari further said the attacks demonstrate a focus on Iran’s critical infrastructure, but emphasized that preparedness and coordination among security and emergency response units successfully neutralized potential risks.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization also confirmed the attack on the Arak heavy water production plant on the same day, though it did not provide details regarding the extent of the damage.

Heavy water facilities are considered among the country’s key infrastructure, playing an important role in the production of various radiopharmaceuticals.
