U.S. Sanctions Iran-Linked Financial Network
WANA (Sep 16) – The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Tuesday that it has imposed sanctions on what it claims is a financial network connected to Iran’s armed forces.
According to the statement, the network was allegedly supporting Iran’s defense sector in a manner that Washington says “threatens regional security.” As a result, the designated individuals and entities have been added to the U.S. sanctions list.
The Treasury asserted that those targeted were involved in facilitating financial activities for Iran’s defense industries, and that any assets they may hold in the United States will be frozen.
The move comes despite repeated assertions from Tehran that its defense programs and related financial activities are entirely legitimate and conducted within the framework of international law.
The Islamic Republic maintains that U.S. unilateral sanctions lack any legal basis and serve only as tools of political and economic pressure aimed at undermining Iran’s deterrence capabilities.
