WANA (Jun 14) – Despite another violation of the ceasefire in Lebanon and an Israeli strike on southern Beirut, U.S. officials continue to signal their intention to move forward with diplomatic efforts involving Iran.

 

According to U.S. media reports, Mike Waltz, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday that Washington still hopes to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran later that day. Without addressing Israel’s latest attacks on Lebanon, Waltz said he did not want to comment ahead of any official announcement but claimed that President Donald Trump remains “firmly committed” to finalizing the initial framework of a peace agreement with Iran.

 

The remarks came as Israel once again violated the ceasefire in Lebanon, carrying out strikes in southern Beirut, an action that has drawn significant attention and criticism.

 

Iran has repeatedly warned that Lebanon is an integral part of any ceasefire arrangement and that continued attacks on Beirut would prompt a response.

 

Meanwhile, the U.S.-Israeli news website Axios reported that Israel had informed the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) of the planned strikes on Beirut before they were carried out. The report raises questions about the extent of Washington’s awareness of, and possible coordination regarding, Israeli military actions in Lebanon.

 

While the United States continues to emphasize diplomatic engagement with Iran, developments on the ground in Lebanon and the continuation of Israeli attacks have added further uncertainty to the prospects of any potential agreement or understanding.
