UAE Orders Closure of Iranian Institutions
WANA (Mar 19) – The United Arab Emirates has reportedly ordered the closure of three Iranian institutions in the country, including Iranian schools, the Iranian Hospital in Dubai, and the Iranian Club, amid rising regional tensions.
According to reports, UAE authorities instructed the shutdown of Iranian-run schools and ordered the suspension of operations at the Iranian Hospital in Dubai, while the Iranian Club in Dubai—a cultural and social center—has also ceased operations. Iranian nationals working in these institutions have reportedly been instructed to leave the country immediately.
The developments come amid escalating tensions following the start of a wider regional conflict, with military exchanges involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Impact on Travel and Diplomacy
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that the UAE may have closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn diplomatic staff. Additionally, tourist and short-term visa issuance for Iranian nationals has reportedly been suspended, with previously issued visas also canceled or suspended.
Before the escalation, the UAE—particularly Dubai—was a major destination for Iranian tourists and business travelers, alongside cities such as Istanbul. The suspension of flights has effectively halted this travel route.
Iranian Schools in the UAE
Iran’s Education Minister previously expressed concern over the shutdown of Iranian schools in the UAE and called for intervention by UNESCO.
Officials estimate that around 2,500 Iranian students are enrolled in these schools. The closure is expected to significantly disrupt their education, particularly as many students reportedly lack proficiency in other languages such as English or Arabic.
Iranian Hospital in Dubai
The Iranian Hospital in Dubai, established in 1972, was one of the oldest medical facilities in the city and was operated by Iranian medical staff under the supervision of the Iranian Red Crescent.
Reports indicate that the hospital was closed earlier this week, ending decades of operation.
Iranian Club in Dubai
The Iranian Club in Dubai, established in 1990, functioned as a cultural, social, and recreational center for the Iranian community. It included facilities such as a hotel, restaurant, sports amenities, a theater, and educational and cultural programs.
The closure of these institutions marks a significant shift in the long-standing presence of the Iranian community in the UAE.
