UK Tightens Sanctions on Iran
WANA (Feb 02) – The UK government announced on Monday a new round of sanctions against Iran, adding ten individuals and one Iranian entity to its sanctions list. The move was taken within the framework of London’s stated human rights policies.
According to a statement by the UK Foreign Office, the new measures have been imposed under the Iran Sanctions Regulations 2023. The published list includes Eskandar Momeni, Iran’s Minister of Interior, Babak Zanjani, and the Law Enforcement Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran. British officials said the decision was linked to allegations concerning the human rights situation.
The UK stated that the sanctions targeting individuals include asset freezes, travel bans, and restrictions on serving as company directors. Measures against the designated entity also involve asset freezes and prohibitions on company management.
These developments come as Iranian officials have previously criticized Western approaches toward Iran. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has said that sanctions directly affect the daily lives of ordinary citizens, including patients’ access to medicine and medical treatment, and described such policies as inconsistent with European claims of concern for human rights.
He also warned that the continuation of these policies could weaken Europe’s position as a constructive and influential international actor and negatively impact diplomatic engagement.
