WANA (Aug 07) – Ten major British trade unions, including the country’s largest union, sent a joint letter on Friday urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to oppose what they described as a “destructive and illegal war against Iran” led by the United States and Israel, citing severe economic fallout on domestic living costs.

 

The union leaders called on the British government to recognize the threat that escalations in the Middle East pose to household budgets and national economic plans. Among their key requests, the signatories urged the Prime Minister to revoke permission for the U.S. military to launch air strikes against Iran from Royal Air Force (RAF) bases.

 

“We see how the destructive and illegal U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran are intensifying the cost-of-living crisis for our members and the British public,” the unions stated in the letter.

 

According to figures cited in the document:

  • Average annual household energy costs in the UK have risen by £221 since the start of the conflict.
  • Monthly grocery bills are projected to increase by £32.80.
  • Union leaders cautioned that the domestic cost-of-living crisis cannot be resolved without an end to the military escalation.

 

The letter further stressed that ending the conflict is essential for the success of government initiatives aimed at housing affordability.

 

The appeal follows previous authorization by the British Prime Minister allowing U.S. forces to utilize UK military bases for operations characterized by London as “defensive strikes” against Iranian targets.
