Ukraine Cancels Iran Diplomatic Visa Deal
WANA (Aug 21) – The Ukrainian Cabinet has terminated a memorandum of understanding with Iran that allowed visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
Taras Melnychuk, the government’s representative in the Ukrainian parliament, announced the decision on Wednesday via his Telegram channel, stating:
“The memorandum of understanding between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran on visa waiver for citizens holding diplomatic and service passports, signed in Kyiv on March 15, 1993, has been terminated.”
This move follows Kyiv’s decision in November 2024 to cancel a 1993 air transport agreement with Tehran.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Iran of supporting Russia in the ongoing war, while Tehran has consistently rejected the claims, stressing that it seeks peace and stability and is not a party to the conflict.
Ukrainian authorities have also been steadily withdrawing from agreements signed with Russia and Belarus within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
