UN Chief Affirms Iran’s Right to Self-Defense
WANA (Mar 21) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations reaffirmed Iran’s right to self-defense during a phone call with the country’s foreign minister, while also calling for efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.
According to reports, António Guterres told Seyed Abbas Araghchi that “there is no doubt about Iran’s right to defend itself.”
During the conversation, Iran’s foreign minister outlined details of recent attacks, stating that civilian sites—including schools, hospitals, and residential areas—had been targeted. He described these actions as a clear violation of international law and fundamental humanitarian principles, and called for strong condemnation from the international community and relevant institutions.
Araghchi also emphasized Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, warning: “ The Islamic Republic of Iran had previously warned all relevant parties in the region and beyond that any military action by the United States against Iran would result in all U.S. bases and facilities in the region being targeted.”
He further stressed the responsibilities of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security, expressing Iran’s expectation that the Secretary-General and the Security Council adopt stronger positions in condemning such actions. He cautioned that silence or insufficient responses could lead to further instability and rising tensions.
For his part, the UN chief referred to what he described as aggressive actions by the United States and Israel, stressing the need to respect international law and avoid further escalation.
Guterres reiterated that Iran’s right to self-defense is unquestionable and underscored the importance of efforts to contain the conflict and reduce its humanitarian and security consequences.
