UN Resolution 2231 Must Be Considered Terminated on October
WANA (Sep 30) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stressed that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 and all restrictions outlined within it regarding Iran’s nuclear program must be considered terminated on the scheduled date of October 18.
During his visit to New York, Araghchi held talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister outlined Iran’s positions on developments in West Asia, warning about the serious threats posed by Israel’s continued aggression and violations of international law to global peace and stability.
He underlined the special responsibility of the United Nations and its Secretary-General in safeguarding the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.
Referring to recent Israeli and U.S. military actions against Iran’s sovereignty in June, Araghchi condemned the attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations, describing it as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, as well as a betrayal of diplomacy. He stressed the need to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Araghchi also criticized the United States and three European countries for attempting to misuse the dispute resolution mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) in order to reinstate terminated UN Security Council resolutions against Iran.
He called the move unjustified and unlawful, describing it as an unprecedented blow to diplomacy and a sign of bad faith by these countries.
The Iranian foreign minister further denounced repeated violations of the UN Headquarters Agreement by the U.S. government, including imposing unjustified and illegal restrictions on Iranian diplomats in New York, and urged the UN Secretary-General to take appropriate action.
For his part, Guterres reiterated the importance of all parties adhering to diplomacy in resolving international disputes and affirmed the UN Secretariat’s readiness to provide assistance in this regard.
He also stressed the obligations of the host country toward UN member states and the necessity of avoiding violations of the Headquarters Agreement.
