United Nations Statement on the Reinstatement of Six Resolutions and Sanctions Against Iran
WANA (Sep 29) – Following what it described as the unlawful actions of Europe and the United States and the undermining of the UN’s diplomatic and negotiation process, the United Nations issued a statement announcing details of the reinstatement of Security Council sanctions and resolutions against Iran under the snapback mechanism.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, said on Sunday local time:
“In accordance with the procedure set out in paragraphs 11 and 12 of Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), as of 8 p.m. Eastern Time, all provisions of Resolutions 1696 (2006), 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008), 1835 (2008), and 1929 (2010) have been reimposed in the same manner as they were applied prior to the adoption of Resolution 2231 on 20 July 2015.”
The UN statement further noted: “Accordingly, the sanctions list of the Security Council Committee established under Resolution 1737 (2006) is reinstated. It includes 43 individuals and 78 entities that had been listed prior to the adoption of Resolution 2231 on 20 July 2015.”
The statement added that the names of these sanctioned individuals and entities have now been incorporated into the consolidated sanctions list of the UN Security Council.

Diplomacy Against the Snapback Mechanism . JCPOA
The six previous Security Council resolutions against Iran, which had been terminated in the past, were reactivated as of early sunday, 27 September 2025. This move was carried out by the European troika through the misuse of the dispute resolution mechanism under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the P5+1.
In recent weeks and days, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and a high-level diplomatic delegation made continuous efforts to prevent the reimposition of these sanctions. Their efforts included direct negotiations with the European troika, reaching an agreement to resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Cairo, and presenting constructive proposals on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. However, the alignment of the three European countries with the United States ultimately prevented these initiatives from succeeding.
Simultaneous with the European troika’s move to trigger the snapback of sanctions, the Iranian Foreign Minister sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, stressing:
“The Islamic Republic of Iran firmly rejects the alleged reinstatement of terminated resolutions under Resolution 2231 (2015). Neither Iran nor any UN member state is obliged to comply with such unlawful actions.”
