WANA (Jul 15) – The U.S. Treasury Department announced on Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions on a number of Iranian and Russian individuals and entities, citing what it described as activities related to “weapons proliferation.”

 

According to information published on the Treasury Department’s website, the sanctions were introduced under the claim of disrupting networks allegedly supporting Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, as well as Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programs. Several individuals and organizations have been added to the U.S. sanctions list as part of the measures.

 

The U.S. Treasury Department claimed that the new restrictions were aimed at “disrupting supply and support networks” linked to military activities. Iran and Russia have repeatedly rejected similar allegations in the past, describing Washington’s unilateral sanctions as political and economic pressure against independent countries.

 

The announcement comes as the United States had committed, under the terms of the Islamabad Memorandum, not to impose new sanctions on Iran during the 60-day implementation period of the agreement and to gradually lift previously imposed restrictions.

 

In recent days, U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally declared the Islamabad Memorandum terminated. Following renewed tensions in the Gulf and U.S. strikes on areas in southern Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry officials said the memorandum had effectively “collapsed” due to what they described as repeated violations of its commitments by the United States and was no longer being implemented.
