WANA (Mar 27) – The Director General of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts for Hamadan Province has officially reported that parts of the historic Tomb of Baba Taher were damaged following yesterday’s aerial attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime on the city of Hamadan.

According to the Director General, the impact of the explosion’s shockwave caused several stones and decorative elements of the tomb to break, resulting in serious structural damage to the monument.

The official emphasized that the protection of cultural heritage during wartime must be granted greater attention by international organizations and the global community.

Who Was Baba Taher?

Baba Taher, also known as Baba Taher Oryan, was a renowned 11th-century Persian mystic and poet, celebrated as one of the most revered figures in early Persian literature. He is famous for his “Do-baytis,” or two-line verses, which were composed in a local dialect and are known for their profound spiritual depth and emotional simplicity.

The tomb itself is a landmark of the city of Hamadan, featuring a distinctive turquoise-domed octagonal tower that was completed in 1970 to honor the poet’s legacy. The site is registered as an Iranian National Heritage monument and is considered a site of immense historical and architectural value to the world.

Under the 1954 Hague Convention, the targeting or collateral damage of such cultural property is strictly prohibited, as these sites are recognized as the shared heritage of humanity.
