WANA (May 20) – Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, warned that the United States is poised to trap itself in another endless conflict, invoking a prominent quote from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s memoir to critique American foreign policy.

In a social media post, the Iranian Parliament Speaker referenced Chapter 11 of Vance’s bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy, highlighting the historical domestic toll of foreign military engagements on working-class Americans.

“We felt trapped in two unwinnable wars, and a disproportionate share of fighters came from our neighborhood,” Ghalibaf posted, quoting Vance.

Criticizing the Domestic Cost of U.S. Interventions

Elaborating on the quote, Ghalibaf suggested that current geopolitical trends are leading to a repeat of past economic and social grievances within the United States.

“Hillbilly 2 incoming,” the Parliament Speaker wrote. “America’s poor and forgotten will foot the bill for the broligarchs, Dimon the demon, and the beltway war merchants.”

The statement aligns with recent remarks made by senior Iranian officials targeting U.S. economic vulnerabilities, public discontent over inflation, and internal political debates regarding foreign military spending.

By directly citing the U.S. Vice President’s own literary reflections on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Ghalibaf sought to emphasize a growing disconnect between Washington’s political elite and the American working class amid escalating regional tensions.
