What Did Araghchi Tell the Australian Foreign Minister?
WANA (Sep 24) – Iran’s Foreign Minister expressed regret over Australia’s recent decision to downgrade bilateral relations and its inappropriate treatment of the Iranian ambassador, stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran “absolutely rejects baseless claims and unfounded accusations against itself or any of its institutions” and expects governments to act responsibly in their positions and allegations regarding other countries.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, who is in New York to attend the annual session of the UN General Assembly, met on Tuesday afternoon with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, following a request from the Australian side.
During the meeting, Araghchi referred to the long-standing diplomatic ties between Iran and Australia based on mutual interests, reiterating Tehran’s disappointment with Canberra’s recent approach toward bilateral relations. He emphasized that Iran does not accept “any baseless allegations” and called on the Australian government to adopt a more responsible stance.
He also pointed to Israel’s record of sabotage and disinformation against Iran, aimed at distracting international opinion from the situation in Gaza, noting that Australian officials have so far only repeated accusations against Iran “without providing the slightest evidence” to substantiate their claims. Such an approach, he said, runs counter to the principles of good faith and accountability in international relations.

Araghchi and his delegation had arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, to attend the 80th annual session of the UN General Assembly. In addition to participating in the Assembly’s meetings and outlining Iran’s positions, the foreign minister is also scheduled to hold separate talks with counterparts from other countries and members of the media.
The 80th UN General Assembly opened on Tuesday, September 23, and will conclude on Monday, September 29. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also traveled to New York to attend and deliver a speech at the Assembly.
