What Did Araqchi Tell the EU and Three European Foreign Ministers?
WANA (Aug 22) – The foreign ministers of three European countries and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi.
During the conversation, Araqchi outlined Iran’s position on the so-called “snapback” mechanism, stressing the responsibility of the three European countries and the EU in this regard. He warned that these countries lack the legal and moral authority to invoke such a mechanism and cautioned about the consequences of doing so.
Araqchi emphasized that, while Iran defends itself with strength, it has never abandoned diplomacy and remains open to any diplomatic solution that guarantees the rights and interests of the Iranian people.
Responding to the European proposal of extending UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to allow more time for diplomacy, Araqchi noted that such a decision lies solely with the Security Council. He underlined that while Iran has clear positions and principles on the matter, it does not take part in that process.
He added that Iran would, however, consult with its partners in the Security Council regarding the implications of such a move and the way forward.
For their part, the three European countries and the EU foreign policy chief reiterated their readiness to work toward a diplomatic solution.
