What Happened at Tehran’s Sharif University Gatherings?
WANA (Feb 21) – A group of students gathered at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran at the start of the new academic term to mark the 40th day since the deaths of victims of January’s unrest.
According to university sources, the gathering was initially intended to be held as a silent sit-in in a calm atmosphere. However, the presence of several masked individuals reportedly shifted the event from its original course, leading to the chanting of slogans with a particular political orientation.
As the gathering continued, tensions escalated on campus. Reports indicate that some individuals used bladed weapons, injuring several students. Two knives were reportedly discovered and confiscated from individuals accused of disrupting order at the university.
Stone-throwing by some participants also resulted in additional injuries and further heightened tensions within the university grounds.
Similar gatherings were also reported at the University of Tehran and Amirkabir University of Technology, involving groups of students.
