Will Oil Prices Surge Again Following the Full Closure of the Strait of Hormuz?
WANA (Jun 11) – The complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz has once again fueled speculation about the future of the global oil market. As one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, any disruption in the waterway’s operations can have a direct impact on international energy prices.
Following the recent escalation of tensions in the region, authorities announced that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to all maritime traffic, including oil tankers and commercial vessels. The Gulf Waterway Management Authority also stated that the passage will remain closed until further notice, urging holders of transit permits to await additional instructions.
At the same time, some energy analysts believe the development could trigger another rise in oil prices. Energy researcher Seyed Ehsan Hosseini noted that previous closures of the Strait of Hormuz affected approximately 12.5 million barrels of oil per day in global supply.
According to Hosseini, the United States and China were able to temporarily offset most of that shortfall by drawing on their commercial and strategic petroleum reserves. However, he argues that if current restrictions persist and those reserves continue to decline, the market could face a genuine supply shortage.
The analyst also emphasized that the partial reopening of the strait in the past helped ease pressure on global markets. A complete shutdown, however, could once again raise concerns about the security of oil supplies—one of the key drivers of higher prices in international energy markets.
In his view, if the current situation continues and oil inventories in the United States and China are depleted further, a sharp spike in oil prices cannot be ruled out. He predicted that under such circumstances, crude oil prices could potentially climb to between $150 and $200 per barrel.
Global markets are now closely watching developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that has long been regarded as one of the world’s most sensitive energy chokepoints.
