YouTube Blocks Dozens of Iranian Channels Over U.S. Sanctions
WANA (Jun 13) – Google has initiated a sweeping crackdown on YouTube channels associated with Iranian individuals and entities, citing compliance with United States sanctions.
According to reports, Google confirmed it took action against numerous accounts following an investigation into dozens of YouTube channels linked to sanctioned Iranian figures and organizations.
The move comes in the wake of a report published by an American non-governmental organization (NGO), which claimed YouTube was displaying advertisements on these channels, potentially providing commercial services to sanctioned entities.
Reports identified over 75 YouTube channels allegedly tied to Iranian individuals, media outlets, and institutions currently on the U.S. sanctions list. Notable names include billionaire Babak Zanjani, politician Ali Akbar Velayati, Al-Mustafa International University, and Fars News Agency, among others.
Fars News Agency and Crypto Platforms Hit
Among the high-profile casualties of this sweep is Fars News Agency. Its sole YouTube presence, “Fars TV” (operating under the handle @TV.Farsnews), had only launched approximately five months ago.
On June 10, Google dispatched a notice to Fars News declaring the account inaccessible, adding that the account would be reviewed for permanent deletion starting May 6, 2027. Google has also completely deactivated the official Fars Google account.
Simultaneously, reports indicate that the YouTube channels of several prominent Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges—including Nobitex, Wallex, Ramzinex, and Bitpin—have vanished from the platform. These tech channels collectively held over 15,000 subscribers, and their removal appears aligned with this intensified enforcement of U.S. sanctions by American tech firms.
While Google confirmed it took executive action against channels violating its policies, it has declined to release specific details regarding the exact number of blocked accounts or whether the actions constitute permanent bans, temporary suspensions, or demonetization.
The Broader Impact of Digital Sanctions
This latest enforcement highlights the massive digital embargo facing Iranian users. Under the banner of sanctions, the U.S. has effectively blocked access to roughly 200,000 domains—equivalent to nearly one-fifth of the global internet’s mainstream services—for users inside Iran.
This digital blockade restricts access to vital daily tech tools, including:
- AI Models: Gemini, ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Perplexity.
- Developer & Cloud Tools: GitLab, Cloudflare, Oracle, and Firebase.
- Hardware & Education: Intel drivers, Zoom, and Coursera.
Critics point out a stark contradiction in these policies: while United States officials and affiliated Persian-language media outlets frequently state their support for the Iranian public’s right to a free and open internet, sweeping corporate sanctions continue to cut ordinary citizens off from the global digital economy and essential educational tools.
