Zarif: Trump Will Soon Be Gone, but Iran Will Remain
WANA (Apr 01) – Iran’s former foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, stated that while U.S. President Donald Trump will soon leave the political stage, Iran will endure. He emphasized that “security must be for all.”
In a post on the social media platform X, Zarif addressed Iran’s southern neighbors in the Persian Gulf, stressing that security cannot be purchased from external powers.
He warned that foreign military bases do not bring stability but instead serve as launchpads for war.
Referring to the past five decades, Zarif argued that most members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council have outsourced their security in relation to Iran. He outlined a historical pattern of such policies:
- 1980–1988: Financial support was provided for Saddam Hussein’s war against Iran.
- 1985: Iran’s proposal for a regional security framework was rejected.
- 1990–1992: Despite Iran’s assistance in repelling Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, confrontation over Iranian islands followed.
- 2001–present: Pushed a strategy of “behead the snake.”
- 2015: Iran’s proposed non-aggression pact was rejected, while funding was directed toward the deployment of U.S. military bases.
- 2015–present: Lobbying efforts were made against the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, alongside support for “maximum pressure” policies targeting Iran’s economy.
- 2019: The Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE) initiative was rejected, while sanctions effectively restricting Iran’s access to the Strait of Hormuz were supported.
Zarif further claimed that, at present, PGCC countries have been among the most active supporters of what he described as Trump’s campaign against Iran, yet have faced insults and have been used as a shield for Israel.
He concluded by reiterating that while Trump’s tenure is temporary, Iran’s presence is permanent, underscoring that lasting regional stability requires inclusive security arrangements for all nations.
