Zarif Urges Iran to Leverage Position for Peace Deal
WANA (Apr 03) – Iran’s former foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has called on Tehran to use what he described as its current strategic advantage not to prolong conflict, but to declare victory and pursue a comprehensive peace agreement.
Writing in Foreign Affairs, Zarif argued that such a deal should aim to end the ongoing hostilities and prevent future wars. “Tehran should use its advantage not to continue the war, but to declare victory and reach an agreement that ends the conflict and prevents the next one,” he wrote.
Zarif stated that Iran did not initiate the conflict with Israel and the United States, but claimed that after more than a month of fighting, the Islamic Republic is “clearly prevailing.”
He added that Iran has maintained continuity of leadership despite the assassination of senior officials and has repeatedly responded to attacks on its military, civilian, and industrial infrastructure.
He further argued that U.S. and Israeli leaders, who he said entered the conflict under the illusion of forcing Iran into submission, now find themselves “in a quagmire without an exit strategy,” while Iranians have achieved what he described as a “historic accomplishment of resistance.”
Proposed Framework for Peace
Zarif also outlined details of a proposed peace framework:
Iran: Limited uranium enrichment under international supervision; reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
United States: Lifting of sanctions; payment of compensation; signing of a non-aggression pact
Additional Measures:
- Economic cooperation between Iran and the United States
- Restoration of diplomatic and consular relations
Zarif emphasized that a simple ceasefire would be insufficient, arguing instead for a comprehensive peace agreement to ensure long-term stability.
