Ghalibaf Heads to Russia
WANA (July 10) – Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, is leading a parliamentary delegation to attend the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, today, Wednesday, July 10. The forum’s theme is “The Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security.”
This marks the first participation of a high-ranking Iranian official in BRICS public meetings since Iran’s formal membership in this significant alliance. One of the primary objectives of the Iranian parliamentary delegation’s visit to Saint Petersburg is to explore the utilization of BRICS’ capabilities for financial and trade exchanges.

The BRICS group is an international alliance led by emerging economic powers, including China, India, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa. With approximately half of the world’s population and around 40% of the global economy’s capacity, along with rich human and natural resources, BRICS holds significant potential to influence the global economy.
At the BRICS summit held in Johannesburg in late August 2023, the membership of five countries— the Islamic Republic of Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia—was accepted. These countries officially became members of the group starting January 2024.
