Iran: The Leading Country in Blood Transfusion Medicine in the Region
WANA (August 01) – The CEO of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization stated that Iran is the leading country in the region in the field of blood transfusion medicine.
In a message celebrating the 50th anniversary of the organization and “National Blood Donation Day,” Mostafa Jamali said, “We are currently the leading country in the region in blood transfusion medicine.
With a blood donation index of 27 per 1,000 population, we are on par with developed countries and surpass some advanced nations in terms of blood health indicators.”
In another part of the message, highlighting the significant achievements of the Blood Transfusion Organization in the region and the world, it was mentioned:
“Today, the knowledge and technology of blood transfusion medicine in Iran have not only made it possible to provide rare blood for patients, but also, with our country’s membership in the International Rare Blood Bank, enabled us to obtain rare blood from other countries for our compatriots.
Additionally, the provision of unrelated stem cells and the ability to perform genetic sequencing tests using the advanced NGS method for patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplants have been made possible by our country’s Blood Transfusion Organization.
The implementation of a modern screening system and molecular screening tests (NAT) has also significantly improved blood safety by eliminating the risks of transmitting hepatitis and HIV viruses during the window period.”
He emphasized in this message: “For years, Iran has been the only ‘WHO Collaborating Center in the Eastern Mediterranean Region’ in the field of blood health education and research.
This means that blood transfusion services in the region’s countries are developed with the help of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization.
The knowledge of blood transfusion is transferred by our specialists to them, and methods for donor recruitment, screening, plasma processing, standards, etc., are taught to the countries in the region by this organization.
The successful hosting of several international scientific seminars in this field is one aspect of these significant activities.”
