Iran: A Heaven for Hackers Due to Filtering and VPN Usage
WANA (August 07) – The extensive use of VPNs and the ongoing internet filtering policies have turned Iran into a global heaven for hackers. Since the autumn of 2022, the use of VPNs in Iran has tripled. On average, each Iranian user spends 4 hours daily using VPNs.
Statistics indicate that the national internet network has become increasingly insecure due to the persistent restrictive policies and filtering.
According to a report by the Telecommunications Infrastructure Company, there have been 430,000 DDoS attacks targeting 79,000 cyber destinations in Iran over the past 21 months. The scale of the largest DDoS attack in Iran is 49.2% of the largest recorded attack globally.
Network security experts believe that due to filtering and widespread VPN use, Iran’s network has become highly infected and vulnerable, making it an attractive target for hackers.
This issue is reflected in international reports, statistics from the E-Commerce Association, and the recent report from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Company. The company’s report reveals that 65 out of every 100 DDoS attacks in the country are conducted through networks of infected devices.
