WANA (Aug 26) – An American think tank, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, has linked the visit of Qatar’s Prime Minister to Tehran with the close ties between Iran, Qatar, and Hamas, as well as with regional developments, particularly Iran’s decision to retaliate against Israel.

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, is making his first official visit to Iran’s new administration. This visit comes at a time of significant regional developments and reflects the growing relationship between Iran and Qatar. Iran’s support for Qatar during its tension with neighboring Arab states has been a key turning point in their relations.

Given recent events in Palestine and Qatar’s role in ceasefire negotiations and its connection to Hamas, this visit has gained considerable importance. Especially in light of Iran’s stance on avenging Israel, Al Thani’s trip to Tehran is seen as significant from various perspectives.

Richard Goldberg, a senior advisor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, believes that Qatar and Iran share a common view on Hamas. He also suggests that Al Thani might deliver messages from the Biden administration to Iran.

The report highlights Qatar’s close relationship with Hamas and Doha’s financial and political support for the group since 2007. It also discusses Qatar’s relationship with the United States, which has recognized Qatar as a major non-NATO ally. However, following Hamas’ operations on October 7th, some U.S. lawmakers have called for a review of Washington’s ties with Qatar.
