Localization of Automated External Defibrillator in Iran
WANA (Sep 10) – An Iranian knowledge-based company has recently succeeded in localizing the production of automated external defibrillators (AED) for the first time. This achievement is significant not only for the domestic market but also for international markets, as similar foreign devices are often sold at higher prices and access to them has been made more difficult due to sanctions.
Company History and Objectives
Advanced Medical Equipment Company of Toos was established in 2017 to produce high-tech medical equipment. The company focuses on developing products that directly impact saving patients’ lives. They aim to introduce products that have not yet been manufactured in Iran or have few local producers. Currently, the company’s primary mission is to produce equipment related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which can play a critical role in saving lives.
Key Achievement: Automated External Defibrillator
For the first time, this company has obtained certification from the Ministry of Health as an independent manufacturer of AEDs in Iran. The company’s CEO, Mohammad Ahanian, highlighted the importance of placing these devices in public spaces such as airports, metro stations, and parks, where they can play a vital role.
In developed countries, AEDs are commonly found in public places, and operating them requires no special expertise. With just basic training, anyone can use these devices to save the life of someone experiencing cardiac arrest. This AED is also equipped with an intelligent system that provides verbal instructions to the user.
Comparison with Foreign Models
One of the main advantages of this device is its lower price compared to foreign models, costing about one-third of the price of similar imported devices. This price difference can lead to significant foreign currency savings for the country. Ahanian estimates that the country’s need for these devices exceeds 200,000 to 300,000 units, and considering the cost, the potential savings will be substantial.
Technical Advantages and After-Sales Services
This device surpasses top global brands in terms of energy precision, which translates to better performance in saving patients. Ahanian also emphasized the importance of after-sales service, noting that many foreign devices become inoperable due to a lack of proper servicing.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Although the company has not yet obtained the European CE certification, Ahanian mentioned two primary obstacles: the high costs of obtaining the CE and the lack of cooperation from some companies due to sanctions. However, if the culture of using AEDs gains traction in Iran and demand increases, the company could easily expand its production capacity.
This significant achievement marks a major step toward self-sufficiency in the medical equipment sector and opens up future opportunities for export and competition with international brands.
