Russian Official Dismissed Allegations of Nuclear Testing in Iran
WANA (Oct 08) – A senior Russian diplomat at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has rejected claims that Iran conducted a nuclear test.
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative to the IAEA, addressed the speculation on social media regarding seismic events in Iran on October 5, which suggested a link to nuclear testing.
He stated that the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) analyzed data from 25 monitoring stations and confirmed the recorded waveforms matched those of natural earthquakes, not a nuclear detonation. Recent rumours linked a 4.4-magnitude earthquake in Semnan, Iran, to nuclear testing.
The CTBTO, established in 1996 to prevent nuclear explosions, operates an international monitoring system with 337 stations in 89 countries.
To date, 183 countries have signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), and 164 have ratified it, underscoring global commitment to halting nuclear testing. Ulyanov’s comments reaffirm that there is no evidence of nuclear activity related to the recent seismic event in Iran.
