WANA (Oct 21) – The 16th BRICS Summit will be held from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, Russia, with the participation of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. For the first time, Iran will attend the BRICS summit as a full member.

During the summit, held under the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Global Development and Security,” BRICS leaders will express their nations’ positions on global issues. In addition to BRICS leaders, high-ranking officials from over 30 countries and international organizations will also be present.

According to Iran’s embassy in Russia, Pezeshkian’s agenda includes delivering a speech to BRICS leaders, addressing over 40 heads of state and top officials from around the world, and engaging in bilateral meetings.

The summit will take place from the evening of Tuesday, October 22, until Thursday, October 24, in Kazan, Russia, with high-level representatives from more than 20 countries attending.

Kazem Jalali, Iran’s ambassador to Russia, highlighted the achievements of Iran’s first year of BRICS membership. He stated that this year, Iran’s inaugural year in the organization, Russia, as a close ally and neighbor, chaired BRICS. Iran actively participated at the highest level in all BRICS cooperation efforts and significant events, leveraging its close relationship with Russia.

Jalali further explained, “BRICS represents a challenge to the current structure of international power. This alliance seeks to establish a world governed by power pluralism. Some BRICS members, like Iran, are particularly focused on creating fairness in the management of the international system, ensuring that all nations can contribute according to their global weight.”

He continued, “In a unipolar world, everyone must align with American values or liberal democracy. We see the damage this approach has caused globally. Naturally, Iran’s expectations align with those of countries like Russia and China.”

Jalali emphasized the need for BRICS nations to work together to shape the emerging global order. “The West has defined all the standards of the current world and even established international organizations according to their preferences. Why shouldn’t BRICS do the same? For example, creating our own banking systems to replace SWIFT or developing cooperation in energy and anti-terrorism efforts,” he added.

The Iranian diplomat highlighted the economic potential of BRICS countries, noting that they hold a significant share of global GDP and energy exports. “The BRICS nations have the capacity to lead in areas like energy pricing and distribution. Their economies can complement each other, fostering balanced development in contrast to the West’s self-serving growth strategies,” he remarked.

Jalali also expressed hope that the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan will yield positive results for the world, stressing that key issues, such as the situation in Palestine and Lebanon, must be addressed by BRICS members, particularly regarding the brutal killings by the Israeli regime.
