Iran Condemns Israel’s Deliberate Targeting of Journalists as War Crime
WANA (Oct 25) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the deliberate targeting of journalists’ residences in southeastern Lebanon as another instance of Israel’s war crimes.
In a post on the social media platform X, Esmail Baghaei condemned the targeted attack on journalists’ residence by Israeli forces in southeastern Lebanon early Friday (October 27), which resulted in the deaths of cameramen Ghassan Najjar and Wissam Qassem, along with broadcast technician Mohammad Reza from the Al-Mayadeen and Al-Manar networks. He called this incident a further example of Israel’s brutal war crimes.
Baghaei stated, “The Israeli regime has killed 180 journalists and media personnel over the past year alone.”
He emphasized that journalists and media personnel are protected under international humanitarian law.
The Iranian diplomatic spokesperson highlighted that, according to the 1949 Geneva Conventions—particularly the Third Geneva Convention—and the 1977 Additional Protocols, specifically Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol concerning the protection of journalists engaged in dangerous professional missions in armed conflict areas, journalists and their equipment are granted immunity as civilian persons and objects.
