Zelensky: Iran Has Not Provided Missiles to Russia
WANA (Nov 04) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not confirm Western media reports alleging that Iran has supplied ballistic missiles to Russia, though he claimed that discussions between the two countries on the matter are ongoing and remain a concern for Ukraine.
Zelensky stated that while Iran has not yet provided missiles to Russia, he alleged that the two countries are engaged in talks on this issue.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal had claimed that U.S. officials informed their European counterparts that Iran had sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. A similar claim, also lacking evidence, was reported by Reuters.
The White House, Kyiv’s primary military ally, cited The Wall Street Journal in stating that “the transfer of missiles from Iran to Russia represents a significant escalation in Tehran’s support for Moscow.”
Ukraine’s insistence on these Western media claims regarding Iranian missile supplies to Russia comes amid denials from both Iranian and Russian officials in recent days.
Ukrainian Pravda reported that in his latest comments on the matter, Zelensky said, “They (Russia and Iran) are in detailed consultations over missiles that Iran might provide to Russia. Based on our information, they have not delivered these missiles yet, but talks are ongoing, which is worrying for us.”
The Ukrainian president also repeated allegations about Iranian drones being sent to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine, adding that Iran has also authorized their production within Russia.
Meanwhile, Iran’s United Nations representative previously responded to the missile allegations, stating that the Islamic Republic’s position on the Ukraine conflict has not changed.
Iran considers the provision of military assistance to parties in conflict, which would further human and infrastructural losses and impede ceasefire talks, as inhumane. Therefore, it not only refrains from such actions but also urges other countries to cease supplying weapons to the conflicting parties.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry had previously stated, “We have a clear stance regarding developments in Ukraine and the Ukraine crisis, and it is regrettable that some parties involved in the conflict, motivated by political interests, are making accusations against Iran. We are not a part of this conflict and have consistently emphasized that a political solution is the best approach to resolving this crisis.”
