WANA (Dec 10) – Fatemeh Mohajerani, spokesperson for the Iranian government, addressed key issues regarding Syria and bilateral relations with China during a press briefing today.

Respect for Syria’s Sovereignty and Unity

Mohajerani emphasized Iran’s respect for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, expressing hopes for peace and prosperity for the Syrian people. “The destiny of Syria must be determined by its people. We are closely monitoring developments in this country,” she stated.

She also commented on the Syrian military’s response to recent events, noting, “The Syrian army has shown limited resolve to resist. However, all of Iran’s actions have been in line with our national interests, with the preservation of Syria’s and Iran’s territorial integrity as a priority.”

Iran’s Costs in Syria

Responding to questions about Iran’s expenditures in Syria, Mohajerani explained, “Government decisions on such expenditures align with national interests. All measures taken are thoroughly reviewed, and Iran’s approach to international relations is based on dignity, wisdom, and expediency.”

She reiterated the importance of safeguarding diplomatic and religious sites in Syria, adding, “Dialogue with all countries remains our priority, provided stability in Syria is established.”

Unregistered Iranian Pilgrims in Syria

Addressing concerns about unregistered Iranian pilgrims in Syria, Mohajerani urged citizens to heed government travel advisories. “Over the past three days, 4,000 individuals have been repatriated on 10 Mahan Air flights. Evacuating all Iranians is a top priority and will continue until the last citizen is safely returned,” she assured.

Contact with Victorious Factions in Syria

When asked whether Iran has engaged with any victorious factions in Syria, Mohajerani remarked, “All communications are aimed at securing national interests, but formal contacts require a minimum level of stability to establish government-to-government relations.”

Iran-China Cooperation

Turning to relations with China, Mohajerani discussed the progress of the 25-year Iran-China cooperation agreement, stating, “The framework remains at the general level, with no detailed or executive phases reached yet. We are continuing discussions within the context of our national interests and mutual benefits for both nations.”

She concluded by affirming that Iran seeks constructive dialogue with all countries based on mutual respect and aligned with the nation’s priorities.
