Kharrazi: U.S. and Israel Have Long Targeted Syria’s Destruction
WANA (Dec 18) – Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, stated on Wednesday that a comprehensive plan to weaken regional countries against Israeli aggressions, including Syria‘s destruction as a supporter of resistance, has always been a priority for the U.S. and Israel.
Kharrazi made these remarks during a meeting with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, and the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The discussions focused on key regional developments and their impact on Iraq.
He explained that the U.S. and Israel have pursued the strategy of diminishing regional powers, pointing out that it was former U.S. President Barack Obama who first declared, “Assad must go.”
Expressing concern over the situation in Syria, Kharrazi condemned Israel’s exploitation of the power vacuum in the country, including widespread airstrikes targeting Syria’s military and civilian infrastructure, which undermine its sovereignty.
He also warned of the risk of Syria’s territorial disintegration due to the conflicting interests of foreign powers and cautioned about the spillover of insecurity into Iraq.Kharrazi called for urgent action by the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council to address these issues.
During the meeting, Hennis-Plasschaert provided an overview of UNAMI’s activities and expressed hope for the mission’s success despite existing challenges.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Kharrazi reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to assist the United Nations in fulfilling its responsibilities in the region.
