WANA (Jan 17) – In a meeting between the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and the Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives, both sides emphasized strengthening economic, political, and parliamentary relations while removing barriers to private sector activities. This meeting, marking the first high-level visit from Iran to Ethiopia in four decades, provided an opportunity to reevaluate ties and open new horizons between the two countries.

Strengthening Relations and Opening Embassies

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, highlighted the importance of establishing an Ethiopian embassy in Tehran, calling it a key step in developing bilateral cooperation. He stressed that launching a direct air route between Tehran and Addis Ababa would facilitate economic and cultural exchanges. He stated, “Ethiopia holds a significant position in East Africa, and strengthening relations with this country can have a substantial impact on regional stability and security.”

Relaunching the Joint Economic Commission

One of the main topics of discussion was the reopening of the Iran-Ethiopia Joint Economic Commission after a decade of suspension. Tagese Chafo, Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The commission can provide a platform to enhance trade and economic relations.”

Chafo also invited Iranian investors and entrepreneurs to utilize Ethiopia’s economic potential to contribute to its development. He described parliamentary relations as an opportunity to expand economic cooperation and noted, “We should leverage opportunities provided by BRICS and other international organizations to strengthen our collaboration.”

Iran-Ethiopia Cooperation

Challenges and Obstacles

The Iranian Speaker addressed the challenges Iranian economic actors face in Ethiopia, citing issues such as taxation, banking connections, and transportation as major obstacles. Ghalibaf proposed that leveraging BRICS resources could help resolve banking problems and create effective financial solutions.

He added, “Iran has significant capabilities in knowledge-based industries, medical equipment, and modern technologies that can aid in developing economic relations with Ethiopia.”

Collaboration in International Organizations

Chafo praised Iran’s policy of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs, calling for greater cooperation in international forums. He stated, “Iran and Ethiopia can take effective measures in global organizations such as the Human Rights Council and BRICS to counter unilateralism and U.S. pressures.”

A Symbol of Lasting Cooperation

The meeting concluded with the planting of two pine trees in the Ethiopian Parliament’s courtyard—a symbolic gesture representing enduring friendship and cooperation between Iran and Ethiopia. Ghalibaf also signed the Ethiopian House of Representatives’ guestbook, reaffirming the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

Looking Ahead

The meeting between Ghalibaf and Chafo paved the way for defining new avenues of cooperation and bolstering Iran-Ethiopia relations. Developing economic infrastructure, advancing scientific and technological collaboration, and engaging in international forums were identified as key strategic areas for partnership. Given the significant potential of both countries, this engagement could serve as a model for strengthening relations with other African and Asian nations.
