WANA (Jan 25) – Marzieh Afkham, the Director-General for Human Rights and Women’s Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the recent resolution by the European Parliament—which raises allegations about human rights and women’s rights in Iran—as a repetitive, interventionist, and politically driven approach by this European body. She deemed it devoid of any legal validity.

In condemning the European Parliament’s resolution, the Director-General emphasized that the judiciary in the Islamic Republic of Iran is a professional and independent institution, and judicial processes in Iran are always conducted based on the law and under fair trial procedures. She stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran rejects any foreign interference aimed at influencing its judicial processes and functions, considering such interventions contrary to international legal principles and norms.

She also strongly condemned the stance of the sponsors and supporters of this resolution regarding a segment of Iran’s official military forces, calling it entirely unjustified. Afkham asserted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as a lawful and popular institution, plays a vital role in safeguarding Iran’s national security, defending the nation against aggression by Saddam’s regime and other hostile forces, and combating terrorism in the region. She warned that any audacity against this homeland-defending institution will face a decisive reaction from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Afkham criticized certain members of the European Parliament, urging the body to learn from its past unwise actions. She called on the Parliament to abandon its open support for terrorist groups and elements—which, in effect, endorses and promotes violence and violates fundamental human rights—and to instead respect its international legal obligations and contribute constructively to the promotion of peace, stability, and human rights.

The European Parliament recently issued a resolution accusing Iran of human rights violations, including women’s rights abuses. This action sparked a strong response from Iranian officials, who viewed it as interference in the country’s internal affairs.

These accusations come despite the annual report by Human Rights Watch, which highlighted widespread human rights violations in European Union member states over the past year, particularly regarding migrants’ and women’s rights.
